Coronavirus: Restricting Access to the Walled Garden

Message from the Trustees of the Friends of Llanfrechfa Grange Walled Garden

Following the government’s guidance on Covid-19, dated March 16th 2020, the garden’s trustees are implementing some significant changes with immediate effect.

The safety and wellbeing of our volunteers and visitors is our primary concern. We are therefore closing the garden to all but a small number of volunteers who will maintain it and continue with the development of its infrastructure for as long as it is safe to do so.

A letter setting out our current plan has been sent out to all volunteers and members via e-mail. The plan may change in response to any new advice or directives from Public Health Wales, the Government or the Health Board.

We are disappointed not to be able to maintain the wonderful progress we have made in the garden to date and are so grateful to our volunteers and supporters for enabling us to get this far.

We will be back up and running as soon as possible and hope you will continue to support and follow us throughout the coming weeks and months.

Can You help? Working Party – Sat 22nd Feb

2019 Working Party Volunteers

Well we have 14 months before the Grange University Hospital is due to open so we are aiming to get the Garden safe for visitors by that time. Path laying is the most essential part of this aim, so we would really appreciate help from anybody wishing to volunteer this spring.

Here are the dates for the next working party weekends, the first of which is this coming Saturday.  Morning session will be 10am to 1pm, afternoon session 1.30pm to 4.30pm (or come for as long or short as you wish!)

Saturday 22nd Feb (Wales v France KO 16.45)
Sunday 15th March
Saturday 4th April

A light lunch such as soup and a roll will be provided and we usually have plenty of cake too!

Work will be mainly manual, as we have more paths to lay, marking and making borders for paths, barrowing soil and chippings, preparing flower and veg beds, etc. However, for those who cannot do heavy manual work, there will probably be some seed sowing to do and help with food preparation, teas, coffees etc, is always welcome. As the weather forecast is not great, the work plan will be adjusted accordingly and we will cut short the sessions if need be. At this stage any help will be a step in progress and much appreciated.

I do hope you can spare a few hours to help us with this fantastic project!

For catering purposes, please RSVP to Binca Wilson, Membership Secretary at email:  info.lgh.garden@gmail.com

We look forward to seeing you soon

NEXT WORKING PARTY SEPT 7 – CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

Progress on paths after first working party in July 2019

Following the last two very successful working parties, our next one is planned to take place on Sat 7 September in the Walled Garden at Llanfrechfa Grange, Cwmbran, NP44 8YN. Once again, we would love to welcome any volunteers who would like to take part.

Working party volunteers laying in paths in July 2019.

The work will continue to develop the northwest quadrant, which is planned to become a reflective, sensory garden with winding paths, a water feature and seating areas tucked in and around the planting. Over the last two working parties, we have edged the inner paths, laid down membrane and hardcore and started to earth up the flower beds. The perimeter paths are left to do and we need to create the hard-standing for the corner shelter. There are also a variety of other lighter jobs to do around the main garden and help with providing refreshments. Whatever your abilities/interests we can find something for you to do!

The day will be divided into two sessions; 10am to 1pm and 1.30pm to 4.30pm with a free lunch or BBQ at 1 pm for volunteers of either session.

If you would like to volunteer for one or both of these sessions, please let us know by e-mailing us at info.lgh.garden@gmail.com so we know who to expect and can cater accordingly.

We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Can you help? working party 13th july

We are pleased to announce a series of Working Party dates and would love to hear from you if you can help. This is primarily to make a start on constructing what we are calling the “reflective quadrant” in the northwest corner of the garden.

This part of the garden has been cleared of vegetation and has been dormant for a few months and we need to get paths laid out so we can plant up the beds in the autumn. Work will involve digging and laying paths, but we have plenty of lighter work that will need doing also. Whatever your abilities/interests we can find something for you to do! The dates/times are:

Saturday July 13th – 10am to 1pm and 1.30pm to 4.30pm
Saturday August 10th – (times as above)
Saturday September 7th – (times as above)

We will also be offering a lunchtime BBQ as a thank you for volunteering efforts and an opportunity to socialise.
Please consider supporting these working parties to help us progress the next exciting stage of the garden development.

If you would like to volunteer for one of these events, please let us know by e-mailing us at info.lgh.garden@gmail.com so we know who to expect and can cater accordingly.

We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Can you help? Working Party Weekend 6-7 April

Next weekend, at the Llanfrechfa Grange Walled Garden, we are planning to blitz the ground works in readiness for laying down the new paths.

We are planning 4 volunteer working party sessions, each one supervised by one of the charity Trustees.

The sessions will be on:

Sat 6 April 10.00 – 13.00 hrs

Sat 6 April 13.30 – 16.30 hrs

Sun 7 April 10.00 – 13.00 hrs

Sun 7 April 13.30 – 16.30 hrs

New faces are very welcome so don’t worry if you haven’t been before. We just ask that all volunteers wear appropriate footwear (no open toes) and run through a short health and safety briefing before we start. There will be a pick list of jobs to do, some light, some quite heavy, such as:

  • Sorting and grading stones for a new semi circular stone wall being built behind the greenhouse and shed.
  • Digging out and moving more of the soil mountain in the southwest quadrant.
  • Filling in the last few yards of trench for the electricity and water pipes.
  • Digging out foundations.
  • Potting up seedlings.
  • Painting some cast iron tree grills.
  • Keeping tea and coffee flowing.

Refreshments will be available.

We would like to get an idea of numbers to help us organise the work, so if you would like to come along, please drop us a line at our email address: info.lgh.garden@gmail.com

Thank you. We look forward to seeing you.

Walled Garden Event Volunteers Wanted

Do you love the idea of the Walled Garden project but can’t garden or just don’t have green fingers? There are lots of other ways to volunteer or get involved. Right now, we are looking ahead to what events we need to plan for over the coming year and would really welcome any offers of help to take this forward.

We would like to form a small group to help us do this. The kind of things we need are:

  • Help planning and organising the events calendar for the coming year
  • Help publicising events
  • Boosting support for volunteering and membership in the garden
  • Linking in with other local groups and stakeholders
  • Help running activities such as open days, volunteer working parties, manning a stand at external events, celebration and social events.

If you would like to get involved or for more information, please contact Angela Fry, General Secretary – Friends of Llanfrechfa Grange Walled Garden at info.lgh.garden@gmail.com
