Useful Information
Hi,
Delighted to see that there is a possibility of restoring the walled garden at Llanfrechfa. My father was the head gardener at the hospital and worked there from the early sixties until about 1983, this was the time when the gardening team were based within the walled garden. I spent a lot of time within the garden as a child and remember how it was laid out. There was a greenhouse along the full length of the wall to the right as you enter via the entrance opposite the staff canteen and in the bottom corner was a stone building which was used as the morgue in the early days of the hospital. There was also a chicken run along the length of the wall to the left. I also had a summer job on the gardens in 1980ish and started my nurse training there in March 1982.
I have an aerial photo of the hospital but I think is a later picture as it looks as if the new non-heated greenhouse is within the garden, there was a much older framed aerial photo in one of the offices in the old house that I think showed the layout of the walled garden in the early days of the hospital.

Thank you for your interest and your comments John. We are very interested in hearing from people who knew the garden when it was in use as this will help us plan how it looks in the future. Please drop us a line via our email address: walledgarden.abb@wales.nhs.uk as we would be delighted to hear from you and find out a bit more about what you know.

Hello Mr Miles
My name is Jan Smith and I am one of the team of volunteers who are planning the restore the garden at Llanfrechfa Grange and I have read your post with great interest. Thank you so much for the information. Thus far we have been very fortunate to have met with the son of the Head Gardener who was there from 1927 to 1950, and also the Head Gardener who was there in the 80s and 90s. Your father would have been Head Gardener between these two folk so we would really like to hear more from you if at all possible. We really want to understand the history of the garden to help us decide what to do in restoring it for the future, so all memories are really welcomed.
I do hope you will be able to come along to tonight’s open evening, but if not I would be very pleased to meet up with you at your convenience.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards
Jan Smith
